Folder and File Sharing networked windows 10 pc
Step 1: Configure Network Sharing Settings
Before sharing individual folders, you must ensure your PC is visible to others on the network.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I and go to Network & Internet.
- Status: Ensure your connection is set to Private. If it says "Public," click Properties and change it to Private (this enables discovery).
- Advanced Sharing: Scroll down and click Network and Sharing Center, then click Change advanced sharing settings on the left.
-
Enable Discovery: Under the Private profile:
- Select Turn on network discovery.
- Select Turn on file and printer sharing.
- All Networks (Optional): Expand All Networks. At the bottom, you can Turn off password protected sharing if you want anyone on your local Wi-Fi to access files without a login (convenient for home use, but less secure).
- Click Save changes.
Step 2: Share a Specific Folder
Now that the "gate" is open, you can choose which folders to share.
- Right-click the folder you want to share and select Properties.
- Go to the Sharing tab and click the Share... button.
- Select Users: Click the drop-down menu, select Everyone (or a specific user), and click Add.
- Set Permissions: Under "Permission Level," choose Read (they can only view files) or Read/Write (they can add/delete files).
- Click Share, then click Done.
Step 3: Access the Folder from Another PC
Once shared, you can access the folder from any other Windows 10 PC on the same network.
- Open File Explorer (Win + E).
- On the left sidebar, click Network.
- You should see the name of the PC that is sharing the folder. Double-click it.
- If prompted, enter the username and password of the sharing PC (unless you turned off password protection in Step 1).
Pro Tip: To access a folder quickly, you can type the network path directly into the File Explorer address bar using this format: \\ComputerName\FolderName
